Leg Amputation Surgery
Should I have my leg amputated?

I shatterred my foot and ankle in a car accident a year ago and I've had 4 surgeries and I'm still in a cast and on crutches. None of the treatment has been successful, and it hasn't healed right. The doctor says that even if the bones eventually heal, my leg will never be normal, and he says I should consider amputation. Should I do it? I'm only 18, and I'm self conscious about the cast and crutches, and I think I'd be even more self conscious wioth one leg. What do you think?

I agree with Eura, this is too serious a question.

Honestly you need to look at how much the pain is affecting your everyday life and how you feel. You are still very young so at the moment your body can adapt to the injury, but as the doctors stated, your leg might never be normal. You will probably have to use a cane the rest of your life, if the injury is that serious. You should also consider that as you grow older, bones become more and more brittle so there's an even greater risk of losing the leg later on, if you don't undergo the amputation surgery.

Again I am in no way telling you to go one way or the other, but these are the types of issues you might want to ask your doctor and discuss with your family. Ask your doctor for the BEST and WORST case scenarios and make a decision off of that. Good luck and Godspeed!
