Installing Grab Bars for ADA Shower Stalls
An ADA shower stall can make a physically disabled person's life easier so that he or she can enjoy an independent and safe bathing experience. Showers can often be slippery, especially if your tile surface is smooth. Installing grab bars around your shower stall can help a person retain his or her balance in the shower and avoid accidents. ADA (American Disabilities Act) prescribes guidelines that manufacturers must follow while designing bathroom equipment for the physically challenged.
Choose the right grab bar
You must buy a grab bar that is strong enough to support your weight. You can choose from a variety of grab bar lengths, styles, designs and colors to suit your individual needs. The grab bars must be fitted such that you can easily hold onto them in the event of a slip. A grab bar fitted horizontally or at a 45 degree angle is said to provide optimum support. When you fit a grab bar, make sure that the wall clearance is no more than 1.5 inches. It must also have a proper diameter to fit into your hands comfortably. A grab bar is usually made of stainless steel which makes it strong and easy to hold on to.
Get your tools ready
Fitting a grab bar is an easy task if you have the right set of tools and follow instructions correctly. You will require an electronic stud locator, a reversible drill, a drill bit, a marker, screws, masking tape, a screwdriver, a screwdriver bit and the grab bar.
Installing the bars
The first step would be locating the studs. If you have a tile covered wall then finding the studs could be difficult. In such a case, you can use an electronic stud locator to determine where the studs are located. After you have located the positions, mark it with a masking tape and pencil or a marker. The next step is to accurately mark the positions where you will be drilling the holes. This must be done carefully so that you don't drill more holes than necessary.
Drill the holes, ensuring that you use the right type of drill bit and do not apply too much pressure which may damage the surface. Finally, you need to fit the grab bars. Determine where you want to position them before you screw them in. You can apply some silicon caulk to the screws before fitting them to keep the moisture out of the wall. To tighten the screws, you can use a screwdriver or a screwdriver bit. It is best to use an ordinary screwdriver as it is less likely to cause damage and is fast and easy to use.
After fitting the grab bar, test to see whether you can hold on to the bar conveniently, if the access is good and if you can maintain your balance using it. ADA compliant grab bars are undoubtedly a great convenience for the physically disabled and must be fitted to shower stalls to prevent accidents.
