Rotting Berry Tree in Winter- To Fell or Not?

I've a tree - about 14-15 feet tall that's about 5 feet from the house. Recently, a family member yanked on a branch in a fit of anger. The branch was connected perhaps 6" or so from the ground, and was 4-5" in diameter at its thickest; it was perhaps 7-8 feet long. It fell clean off. The wound that its amputation left reveals an orange sort of rot. The other branches (all larger, but not by much) are much stronger, but they all deviate from the trunk higher than the aforementioned branch.

The New England winter is coming, and I'm not sure what that means for the rot or any sort of recovery the tree can make. If it were to topple, it would likely /not/ do so away from the house. Will this tree last another year? Should I fell it, or should I take steps to prolong its life?

Berry tree- is it a mulberry? If it is a mulberry, you could cut it to the ground in the winter and it would grow back in a couple years, without the rot. Mulberries are like blackberries; they taste similar too. If it is a mulberry, you will be amazed how fast it grows back.

Whatever kind of tree it is, if you want to keep it, you need to cut any remaining rot out and winter is the time to do it. The tree is pulling its sap into the roots; if you prune it in the winter it still has lots of nutrients to rebuild leaves and branches.
